William Medcalf will be joining the Benjafield’s Racing Club for a very exciting and unusual event as the club holds a ‘Stubble Racing’ revival on Saturday 3rd October 2015.
What is Stubble Racing? William explains: “The best definition we have found so far came from one of our oldest club members. He said they used to steal a car, drive it across the farmer’s fields and tear the place up until they either ran out of petrol or got shot at. Then they would all retire to the local pub and drink themselves merry.
“Based on that description, we thought it sounded like a great event, only these day’s stealing cars is a bit antisocial so we are inviting entrants to bring their own!”
The event will take place at The Abrey Farm, Norfolk, with the hosts very kindly giving the club access to some stunning land as well as laying on breakfast rolls and a barbecue lunch.
Competitors will face some auto tests through tractor sheds and open barns, have the chance to sample the best grass tracks Thetford has to offer, blast through a military zone – dodging ‘live fire’, and take on a 26-mile on and off road course around the estate.
The event is open to prewar cars only and is perfectly manageable in a standard car. The Abrey’s are preparing the ground and have chosen the right tracks so the risk of any cars being damaged is no greater than on a race circuit. In the unlikely event that anyone gets stuck, there is full recovery onsite.
Each car will need a navigator and entrants can take the event as seriously as they wish as it is run under an MSA permit, making it a perfect event for couples.
William added: “The best thing about this event is that the weather is irrelevant. If it rains, you will get muddy, and if it’s dry, you will get dusty; either way the car will look all the better for it and your mates will think you are a hero in the pub at the end of the day.”
After a day of adventure, there will be a gala dinner in a marquee in the middle of the farm, miles from anywhere, where participants can celebrate the results as prizes are given to those with a more competitive nature.
This really will be a unique event with a few surprises and the Benjafield’s Racing Club would like to thank the Abrey family for their generous spirit in letting the club hold the event on their land.
